Cork Badminton Basics
The Cork Sports Programmes are a new initiative from the Irish Sports Council and the Cork Sports Partnership to help develop sport in Cork. There are currently 9 sports involved in the initiative, with almost all of the programmes under way. The Sports Partnership aims to bring an additional 5 sports into the programme in 2010, which will see the partnership working closer with the National Governing Bodies, County Boards, and Development Officers of the sports to see where and how to implement a sustainable development programme for each of the sports in Cork.
The Sports Partnership will be providing support to the current 9 sports programmes by working with County Boards, Governing Bodies and Development Officers. This support will come in the form of providing equipment, coaching courses, tutor training, programme costs, club development and any other help the clubs and sport needs to help increase and sustain participation levels. One of the main focuses of these programmes is to create more opportunities for people to get involved in sport and to keep them involved after the programme. These opportunities will come in the form of linking schools, clubs and communities together and strengthening the relationships between them so that the opportunity for participation is for the long term and not just a once off.
The Cork Sports Partnership has joined forces with Badminton Ireland to deliver a Badminton Basics Programme to 10 schools throughout Cork. The schools were chosen by the Regional Development officer for Badminton Ireland.
The 10 schools taking part in the badminton basics programme are:
- Ballincollig Community School
- Beara Community School
- Coachford College, Coachford
- Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig
- Glanmire Community College
- Pobailscoil na Trionoide, Youghal
- St. Mary’s Secondary school, Macroom
- St. Mary’s Secondary school, Mallow
- St. Aloysius’College, Carrigtwohill
- St. Mary`s High School, Midleton

‘I have found the Badminton Course to be of huge benefit to the students involved. The benefit of this is that as well as having an educational and enjoyable experience, they are motivated to look at joining a club outside of school and taking the next steps in the sport. Collaboration like this between Sports Partnerships, Badminton Ireland and schools really aid in extending beyond a student’s PE experience and increasing participation levels in various sports’
Wayne, many thanks for your work over the last few weeks,
Michael Carey - Glanmire Community College

Waterford Buntus Blitz
Following on from our very successful Buntus Badminton programme on Friday 12th March Waterford had it’s first ever Buntus Badminton Blitz. The day kicked off at 10am and by the time we had finished at 2pm 108 kids from 10 primary schools around Waterford had played some very enjoyable and indeed competitive games of badminton. We had 6 courts on the go at all stages and this is thanks to all the great help we got from teachers and volunteers. Every child left the hall prize in hand and hopefully looking forward to more of the same in the near future!

Disability
Biggest highlights for me for the year are definitely the 4 Nations Tournament really loved being involved in that. The ALSAA Tournament was a great success. Have enjoyed being involved in all aspects of disability badminton which has involved - Waterford amputee group, Waterford Resource Centre. Ability Days in Carlow, Kilkenny, Cork and Kerry. Helping out the Little People of Ireland. Working with CARA Centre and IT Tralee Adapted Physical Activity students and all work done with SIDO’s in my area.

4 Nations Disability Tournament
Badminton a sport we have all played at some stage and it really is a sport for all and a sport for life. Badminton Ireland is working hard on developing Disability Badminton around the country through our team of development officers who are ready, willing and able to help people out so please feel free to contact us at any time if you feel badminton is something that might interest you. To find out which development officer is closest to you please contact us at any time at the details below. We are available for taster days, come and try it sessions, helping with sourcing coaches, starting up clubs, supporting existing clubs etc all with a vision of getting people playing our sport at a level that suits them from complete beginners playing socially with friends, within a group/organisation setting or in clubs. In Ireland at present there is only one Pan Disability badminton club in Lisburn but we are always keen to help develop new clubs all over the country. If you feel up for some competition then why not progress onto the 4 Nations Disability Badminton Series.
At the Irish leg we had 4 Nations, 90 competitors, 5 disciplines, 3 days and a lot of fantastic badminton! The series is going from strength to strength with this being Irelands second time to host the event. Our intention is to provide competitive opportunities for the various classifications and assist in developing every player’s performance. The tournaments caters for singles, doubles and mixed competitions in the following disciplines - wheelchair, standing upper/lower physical disabilities, learning disabilities and restricted growth.
Our aim in the near future is to run provincial events to introduce people to the sport and to competition with a view to progressing people to play more often and to ultimately compete at 4 Nations level and hopefully beyond.

Inclusive Physical Education
Brennan Services (St John of Gods) have been part of the APA Programme since it started in 1997. They have been critical to the success of the programme as each year they bring in excess of forty adults to participate in a range of sport, swimming and fitness programmes. Their four Sport and Recreation Co-ordinators facilitate and advise the students in their delivery of the APA activities.
This year sixteen adults are participating in a badminton programme which is delivered by five Health and Leisure Degree students under the supervision of Pat Flanagan. The sessions are planned, delivered and evaluated by the fourth year students and are tailored to the needs and ability levels of each individual in the group. As this was a new activity for the majority of the adults they experienced varying degrees of success in learning the skills of the game. This indicated a need to group the participants into advanced, development and beginner groups with a separate lesson plan developed for every group. With the assistance of five social care students we provide one to one coaching for all the participants who require this level of support. This has resulted in the participants improving their skill level over a short period of time.
One of the main reasons for the success of the overall APA programme is the provision of a tutorial/planning hour for each practical group. The Health and Leisure/PE students review the previous lesson and are assisted in planning their next class with the assistance of the APA tutor. This process greatly increases the students confidence and competence in their ability to deliver the practical sessions. Students also get immediate feedback following each practical session from the tutor and in some cases the staff of the disability services.
Our badminton group are delighted to also benefit from the involvement of Badminton Ireland in their tuition. Wayne Doyle (Development Officer Badminton Ireland) supports our programme by advising the students during their planning tutorial and also assisting them in their practicals. We hope that links with governing bodies of sport will continue to expand and assist us in the delivery of our APA Programme

Sport Unites Dungarvan Secondary Schools
On Thursday January 21st, Coláiste Chathail Naofa hosted the inaugural Multi School Sports Festival for the five local secondary schools in Dungarvan. The festival is part of a Multi School Sports Programme being led by sixteen Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) students at Coláiste Chathail Naofa and coordinated by Jason Ryan, PE teacher at the College.
The aim of the Multi Sport Programme is to encourage first year students to experience a wide range of physical activities, the Programme focuses on seven main sports, Badminton, Basketball, Olympic Handball, Rounder’s, Tag Rugby, Table Tennis and Volleyball. The PLC students having received training from local development officers from the sports National governing bodies are responsible for organising and delivering the coaching for each of the seven sports.
Male and female first year students from Ard Scoil Na nDeise, Meanscoil San Nioclás, Christian Brothers, St Augustine’s and Coláiste Chathail Naofa took part in the Festival. Angela Walsh, PE teacher at St Augustine’s said ‘the Festival was very well organised and the students were kept active all day and really enjoyed the event. They are looking forward to the next phase already’.
Jason Ryan said, ‘The Multi Sports Schools Programme’ aims to provide a taste of various sports for first year pupils in the schools of Dungarvan. The sports are being led by the National Governing Bodies of each sport in conjunction with the Sport and Recreation PLC students from Coláiste Chathail Naofa. Training sessions are structured to be fun, enjoyable and educational’.
The second phase of the programme was completed with PLC students visiting each of the five secondary schools weekly to deliver training session in the seven sports to first year students. The programme has huge potential and whilst fostering great camaraderie between the local schools, it also has the benefit of showing students who may not enjoy team sports, different activities they can do to help them reach the recommended daily guideline for young people of sixty minutes of exercise per day. Hi Wayne,
Thank you for a wonderful badminton evening last Thursday, the girls came into school on Friday all talking about it, and when I asked them if we should do it in school next September and let the boys learn too, there was a resounding YES! I talked to my Principal again too, and she is very keen – so I’ll be in touch again about that nearer the time and we’ll get organised!
All the best,
Sonja Coulter

Well Girl 2009
The Well Girl Programme which is in its third phase aims to increase the physical activity levels of female students in four schools participating in the Programme. Transition year (TY) students for each participating school are responsible for the organisation of the programme of physical activitiy sessions in their school.
The third phase of the programme involved 161 TY students enjoying a
3-hour multi activity session at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Waterford in
activities including Aerobics, Badminton, Karate, Self Defence, Tai Chi, Hip Hop, Yoga and Salsa. The students then evaluated the session and took part in four sessions of their selected favourite activity.
After the 4 week block of activity came the most pivotal stage of the programme where TY students volunteered to give up their own time to organise, promote and evaluate a multi activity programme for students within their own school. The first step involved Waterford Sports Partnership visiting the TY students and holding a discussion about the next steps and finding out from the TY students themselves how they had found the festival and four week block of activity. After
this, WSP held a planning meeting with the small group of selected TY students where discussion took place on aspects such as target groups, how to promote the programme, what activities to offer in what facility, how to involve parents and how to make teachers within the school aware of the programme. In order to do this students wrote letters to parents, delivered an assembly to the target group of girls and promoted the programme with posters around the school. All of this was completed in their own time, requiring great commitment, as well as good communication and organisational skills.
The programme will now continue with all schools delivering a multi sport festival to their target girls and two four week blocks of activity with the aim of increasing awareness of activity, but also participation in local clubs. To compliment this, the TY students will produce a booklet evaluating the programme and also giving the girls from their school the contacts for local sports clubs and facilities that they could join.

Mitchelstown Div 5 & 6 Tournament
94 players, 14 clubs, 5 counties, 109 games and 253 sets and 12 hours of badminton went together to make the Mitchelstown Open a smashing success on Sunday the 11th October.
The tournament was hosted by the Mitchelstown Badminton Club in association with their sponsors Mitchelstown Credit Union. Matches took place in two venues in the town namely St. Fanahans College and the CBS. All of the disciplines were covered singles, doubles and mixed for division 5 and 6 players. With the huge amount of entries and with all disciplines being catered for this was a mammoth undertaking for a club to run but the whole day ran smoothly and great credit must be given to all involved in the club on a great days competition and a superbly organised event.
Proceedings began at 9.30am with men’s and ladies singles competitions. There were 14 entries in the ladies event and the men’s event was a full card with 32 players taking to the courts. The doubles were then straight into it with 21 ladies pairings and 21 men’s partnerships taking part. The mixed was the final event of the day and even though most people had played in the previous two disciplines they had obviously saved a lot of energy for the feast of mixed games that were played. Once again there was a full card in the mixed where a total of 32 pairings took to the courts. Indeed the event was oversubscribed with many people looking to pick up partners and a spot in the draw on the day! Congratulations to all players who took part on the day both winners and losers and to the organising committee for such a smoothly run and well organised event. Roll on next year…

Ballincollig CS Tournament
On Wednesday the 10th of march we held a badminton tournament in our school for all the 2nd years to help aid three 5th year students to go over the Tanzania. Over in Tanzania we will be working in the Children Of Arusha Orphanage. We will be teaching young kids how to play sports.
The morning of the tournament we set up the badminton courts early before all the students piled into the hall with enthusiasm. Luckily for us Wayne the Cork Badminton Development Officer gladly agreed to come along and help and had a fantastic plan for the day made up. We started off by giving each pupil an individual number to help identify who would be playing next and with whom. The first game went surprisingly well compared to what we expected. There was great co-operation from all pupils which greatly contributed to the smooth running of the games. As the day went on the atmosphere grew and the students started to get really excited to expose the winners.
The day finally came to a close and we revealed the winners. We had easter eggs and vouchers to hand out to all the winners and sweets to give to each student. We raised €300 from the very successful and enjoyable day.
