Irish National Team Selection

Team selection for all Irish National teams at all age levels is the responsibility of the Technical and Selection panel. They may additionally seek evidence from individuals outside the Technical and Selection panel.

The panel will select the best team capable of winning for Ireland. They may from time to time seek to develop selected players in representative competition if it is in the best long term interests of the player and Ireland. Players who have recovered from injury will be adjudged on their performance standard prior to injury subject to evaluation.

Selection for the National Team is not predicated on age or status as a High performance player and the technical and selection panel will pay particular attention to the following.

1. Performance in designated tournaments

2. Commitment to supporting domestic tournaments

 

Designated Irish Tournaments

Senior

  • Irish International
  • Irish Nationals
  • Autumn Open
  • Ulster Open
  • Leinster Open

 

Junior

  • Irish Nationals
  • Provincial age group championships

 

Both

Any tournament of an equivalent or higher standard outside Ireland

Tournament organizers may request that the HP Office designate a tournament in addition to those mentioned above. In doing so or otherwise due cognisance will be taken of the tournament structure, likely participation and proximity to other designated tournaments.

In making their team selections the panel will be guided by

  1. Results against other Irish players
  2. Results against foreign players
  3. Development potential
  4. Training Commitment
  5. Evidence of ability to compete at a high level
  6. Attitude in competition particularly fighting spirit

It is important that all players and coaches bring to the attention of the HP office any results achieved outside of Ireland in order that the Technical and selection Committee are fully aware of all performances.
