Before attending the Badminton Ireland Level 1 Coaching Ireland Certificated Course, prospective candidates must have completed either the Introductory Coaches Course or the Instructors Course. Details are given below:INTRODUCTORY/LEVEL 0 COACHES COURSE: This 6-hour Coaching Ireland Certificated course aims to provide the candidate with a wide range of activities to help them introduce the game to beginners. There is an emphasis on group activities in the form of warm up ideas and fun games. The technical input concentrates on a small number of shots with the candidates being taken through a teaching process for each shot (Demonstrate, Key Points, Demonstrate, Practice i.e. DKDP) and then attempting to play the shots. A Certificate of Attendance is awarded and the candidate is allowed to take activities within their own club (if affiliated to BI)and assist a Level 1 (or above) Coach. Although there is no formal assessment the course tutor will advise BI and the candidate, if they so wish, as to whether they should attend the Instructors Award Course or could go directly onto the Level 1 Course. Candidates need little or no experience to attend the Introductory Course but must be at least 16 years old before starting the course. The cost is €55.
INSTRUCTORS COURSE: Candidates must be at least 18 years old before the start of the course and should have experience in playing the game. This Badminton Ireland Certificated Course takes place over 2 days (1 weekend usually). The course will primarily be of a practical nature with the emphasis on 'Self improvement through coaching'. In addition to Warm ups, footwork, hitting technique and fun games, candidates will take part in the coaching process (Demonstrate, Key Points, Demonstrate, Practice i.e. DKDP) for the following shots: Forehand and backhand Underarm Lifts High Serve Backhand Low Serve Forehand Overhead Clear Forehand Overhead Drop Forehand and Backhand Net Tumble / Spin Backhand Overhead Drop Candidates will also consider Coaching practice, Planning, and Health and Safety. The Badminton Recruitment policy for coaches will also be in place for this course. Candidates will have to fill in an application form and self disclosure form (declaration on any convictions and giving permission for vetting to proceed where it is available), provide photographic evidence of identity (passport, driving licence) and attend a Child Protection Awareness Course. All participants will be referenced. Once a Certificate of Attendance is awarded, the candidate may take activities within their own club (if affiliated to BI) and assist a Level 1 (or above) Coach.
